pupil dilation with intracameral lidocaine during phacoemulsification

چکیده
purpose: to evaluate pupil dilation with intracameral injection of preservative-free lidocaine 1% during phacoemulsification. methods: this interventional case series included 31 consecutive senile cataract patients scheduled for phacoemulsification and intraocular lens (iol) implantation. pupil dilation was achieved using intracameral preservative-free lidocaine 1% without any preoperative or intraoperative mydriatics. pupil diameter was measured by calipers immediately before and 90 seconds after intracameral injection of lidocaine. results: patients included 16 male and 15 female subjects with mean age of 67.3±9.9 years. four patients were diabetic and four cases had pseudoexfoliation. pupil diameter increased from 2.63±0.3 mm preoperatively to 7.03±0.61 mm 90 seconds after intracameral injection of lidocaine with a mean increase of 4.39±0.53 mm (range 3.4-5.2, p<0.001). mean post-injection mydriasis was significantly greater in patients without pseudoexfoliation (7.1 mm vs 6.00 mm, independent t test and mann-whitney test, p<0.01). there was no significant difference between diabetic and non-diabetic patients regarding of pre- and post-injection diameter of the pupil. conclusion: intracameral preservative-free lidocaine 1% provides rapid and effective mydriasis and can be a safe alternative to other topical and intracameral mydriatics used in phacoemulsification.

Pupil Dilation with Intracameral Epinephrine Hydrochloride during Phacoemulsification and Intraocular Lens Implantation
Objective. To investigate mydriatic effect of intracamerally injected epinephrine hydrochloride during phacoemulsification and intraocular lens (IOL) implantation. Methods. Eighteen cataract patients for bilateral phacoemulsification were enrolled. To dilate pupil, one eye was randomly selected to receive intracamerally 1 mL epinephrine hydrochloride 0.001% for 1 minute after corneal incision (...

متن کاملPupil dilation during visual target detection.
It has long been documented that emotional and sensory events elicit a pupillary dilation. Is the pupil response a reliable marker of a visual detection event while viewing complex imagery? In two experiments where viewers were asked to report the presence of a visual target during rapid serial visual presentation (RSVP), pupil dilation was significantly associated with target detection. The am...

by pseudoexfoliation syndrome, uveitis, posterior synechiae, trauma or previous intraocular surgery . A significant number of patients who present for phacoemulsification cataract surgery have pupils that do not respond adequately despite several pharmacological attempts with different mydriatic agents. Inadequate pupil dilation can decrease visualization during all stages of the phacoemulsific...
متن کاملIndividual Differences in Pupil Dilation during Naming Task
The present study investigates individual differences in pupil dilation during standard word naming. We looked at (i) how individual subjects’ pupil size changes over the course of time and (ii) how well pupil size is predicted by the frequency of the stimuli. The time course of the pupil size was analysed with generalized additive modeling. The results show large individual variations in the p...
